It's funny. Growing up in a primarily black and Hispanic neighborhood, I never really got the gist of racism. Now that may make me sound ignorant or whatever, but seriously, I just don't get it. Is this article saying that nobody's ever used white people to get laughs in a movie? Or Hispanics or Asians? One thing I learned growing up in an environment like that is the ones that scream so loud about racism... are normally the actual racists.

As for the characters in the movie, I knew I was interested in them from reading the backs of the toys' cards at Wal-Mart. Ebonics and street slang aside, they sound absolutely hilarious. Also, if this is such a big issue, then why didn't anyone say anything about Jazz being portrayed exactly the same way in the first one? Maybe he was more serious than these characters, but in the definitions given by this article, he was still a black stereotype.

So I agree with Dave: PC gone mad. Or just idiot critics, and what movie-lover's not used to them by now. Won't make anyone not see it and sure as heck won't make the film makers recall and rewrite it. Honestly, the best things I found from that article were THIS and THIS :D

Sometimes I think there's people who just want to suck the fun out of everything.

Skids and Mudflap suck. No, really. They are the most annoying characters I have ever seen. They do not have the layered useless ness of Morrison's Crime Syndicate (from "Earth 2"), but they are the first TFs I will never buy on the basis of their characters being so annoying.

As far as the racism question goes, Jim is right in that movies have used white stereotypes to get laughs as well. If somebody were to log a complaint against all such humour, that would be one thing. But, saying it is especially wrong for one group, but not another, is absurd.

Agreed. I haven't seen the movie yet...Knowing my frustration with the first movie, you all can probably guess I'm carrying my "movies that kids shouldn't see, but are marketed to kids anyway, suck" torch pretty high right about now... LOL. That's all I'll say on that. The whole racist thing irritates me for the exact reason Dom states. How many times are Christians stereotyped for fun and nobody blinks an eye. There's a fine line between portraying someone in a damaging way and poking fun or even just portraying a character the way that fits. Jim brings up a good example in Jazz...I couldn't see him portrayed any other way. And what do people expect from a bunch of sentient robots who surf the web for their personalities......

The more I think about it, the harder it is for me to argue against Skids and Mudflap being racialized.

It is a question of the degree. Yes, there is Jewish humour in the form of Simmons and his mother. (They run a deli, the "boy" lives with the ill-tempered matriarch.) But, the amount of time Skids and Mudflap spend on screen, and the degree to which they "act black" is out of order.

The fact that the character art is racialized does not help.

This does not mean the movie should be banned or anything. But, I have to agree when I hear people complain about it, if only because there is something to complain about.

But the thing is they aren't acting black, they are acting in a hip hop thug culture fashion, plenty of White, Asian, Hispanic, and other races act that way when they buy into that culture. Heck I even used to act that way in high school. To assume black people act like that is the real racism here I think.

Gotta agree with Mike. Growing up in the ghetto I come from (ask An about South Dallas, he knows), I seen all too many people that weren't black trying to be, and Mudflap and Skids are exactly how those dolts came out. That's the way Mudflap and Skids came across to me, and considering that they came to earth and had to come up with personalities, it makes even more sense.

Note that I put "acting black" in quotes. Skids and Mudflap acted stereotypically black. And, they were on screen for extended amounts of time, unlike say...Simmons's (stereotypically Jewish) mother.

But, it is the control art for the characters that does it for me.

I just talked to a friend of mine. (She is black, which I normally would not mention, but given the context, it is arguably relevant.)

She said Skids and Mudflap are not racist. So, I suppose I have concede I am wrong on this one. (For the record, she echoed the question asked by VC and Jim.)

The real question is what Bay and co intended of course. (Did they intend to make Skids and Mudflap "black".)

I do not consider myself racist. My answer for the question of "why do you assume these two obnoxious characters are black?" is "they are consistent with existing prejudices/stereotypes".

Actually, Dom, in the interview it states that the characters had no existing personalities, and what they ended up with was chosen by the actors who voiced them. Which, given the actors, explains everything. Think about it: one of them is the guy that voices Spongebob Squarepants.
