Yeah, a few news sources are still confirming it, and even after that it'll be hard to believe, especially for those of us who grew up in the 80s. Say what you want about the man, but no one can argue the fact that he was an icon and a music-world legend. His talents, at least, will be missed. -Jim |

Yahoo! Confirmed it. LOS ANGELES – Michael Jackson, the moonwalking former child star who became known the world over as the "King of Pop" before his life and career deteriorated in a freakish series of scandals, died Thursday, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. He was 50. The person said Jackson died in a Los Angeles hospital. The person was not authorized to speak publicly and requested anonymity. The circumstances of his death were not immediately clear. Jackson was not breathing when Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to a call at his Los Angeles home about 12:30 p.m., Capt. Steve Ruda told the Los Angeles Times. The paramedics performed CPR and took him to UCLA Medical Center, Ruda told the newspaper. Jackson's death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music's premier all-around performer, a uniter of black and white music who shattered the race barrier on MTV, dominated the charts and dazzled even more on stage. He was perhaps the most exciting performer of his generation, known for his feverish, crotch-grabbing dance moves, his high-pitched voice punctuated with squeals and titters. His single sequined glove and tight, military-style jacket were trademarks second only to his ever-changing, surgically altered appearance. Over the years, his skin became lighter and his nose narrower. |

That man was truly a musical legend, every pop singer that sang and danced after him owes their career to him. Usher, Justin Timberlake, so many others that I won't bother naming. |

Mr. Jackson's life seemed pretty well screwed up. He may not have been a good idea for a role model. On the other hand, he made some of the most fantastic music ever, and was a great entertainer. I'm hoping that given time, the controversies and bad decisions that plauged his life will fade from memory, and his music won't. I generally don't care what happens to most celebrities, so was kinda surprised by being actually a little affected by Jackson's passing. I guess you listen to Thriller a thousand times in the eighties, it sticks with you. |

I was amazed at how upset people were by Jackson's death, even discounting the controveries. An on-line friend of mine is 23, young enough to have missed Jackson's height, and it warranted tremendous amounts of attention from her. Dom -sooooo, North Korea..... |

The fact that no one's willing to do anything about North Korea bothers me alot. As a veteran it makes no sense to me that we will spend so much time and manpower, not to mention the money and lives lost, to go after someone who's not done a thing to us, but we will do nothing against a nation that has openly threatened us with the threat of nuclear bombardment. Sure, I believe Hussein was evil in the worst way, and I believe he had to be taken out. Heck, I even believe that we were the right, maybe even only, people to do the job, but he was still no threat to us at that time. This guy in Korea is. So what now? As for the topic at hand, yes, I too was emotinally distraught over Jackson's death, but I see his death the same way I saw my grandmother's who passed recently. Like her, he died many years ago, and this man that recently passed away was not truly him. True, it was insanity that killed him early on (and I truly believe that jacko was clinical), and alcohol that killed what was once my grandmother, but the end result is the same. The person that recently died was not the person we all loved and adored. Remember the better days. -Jim |

North Korea, though, they're the kinda enemy America's used to fighting, yeah? What I mean is, Al Quidea, they've managed to not be wiped off the face of the earth for so long because they aren't a traditional adversary. There's not really a central power there, no real army to take out. Just a group of fanatics with cheap explosives that can cause no end of trouble. I know Kim-Jong Il is reputed to be outright crazy, but is he crazy enough to send some nukes our way? It just seems like that'd be suicide. And even if he's nuts enough to do it in his final days, is his son and likely successor the kinda guy that's gonna see that through? I'm no student of military tactics or anything, and may have no clear idea of North Korea's military strength, but it seems like the United States could pretty much take them out in a relatively short time. Feel bad for South Korea, who'd be stuck right there, though. Of course, North Korea's allied with China, yeah? There's the trouble, I guess. |
