I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere before...maybe not here, maybe it was. But I was just thinking about this cuz kiddo and I watched Revenge of Cobra again the other day. Best thing about that episode...Shipwreck. :) Of course. Jim changing his avatar and such also brought this to mind.

I think one of the MANY reasons I like him so much is that he's a lot like Han Solo. I'm not a huge Star Wars fan. I mean I can recite all the best lines right along with the movies and I enjoy them, but it's just not on my top 5 list. (Bonus points for anyone who can name my top 5. Sorry, no prize...LOL) Star Wars might make #6. BUT Han Solo probably does make my top 5 characters list. I think I must be attracted to the independent-look-out-for-number-one-tough-guy spirit...no idea where MacGyver and my hubby fit into that. LOL

OK...so I think Shipwreck and Han Solo are a lot alike. They both had that free agent thing going on..."I'm with myself and anyone who can pay my price." Makes me wonder what "price" GI Joe offered him. After Revenge it wasn't so much, but he did retain an independent, aloof streak...a lot like Solo. In spite of that, they played well with others...to a point...and I think wanting the good guys to win won out over getting what they could out of it. They're both strong willed and stubborn. Yeah, there's a difference. I'm strong willed. Hubby's stubborn. LOL. They were also loose canons at times with hot tempers, but they always came through in the end. Shipwreck never seemed to get the girl...at least Han Solo did in the end. ;) Well, kind of, right? I can't remember now. Even the way they were introduced had similarities...both in a bar in a desert town, surrounded by unsavory characters and shady dealings, both apparently looking to make a buck and ending up helping the good guys and saving the world. :)

Okay, I will bite:

Shipwreck v/s most any kid characters.

If you look at Shipwreck, he is the kid identification character in the old "GI Joe" cartoons. It would not have made sense to have an annoying kid (like Daniel from "Transformers") running around with the Joes. And, it would have made less sense to have Shipwreck be a complete imbecile. So, instead, the writers made Shipwreck a flawed character. He was not as good, (perfect) as Duke. But, when you are a kid, you know you can never be Duke. But, a guy like Shipwreck was somebody we could all relate to. (Normally, I do not give points for "being able to relate to a character", but in this case, I will make an exception.)
