Well, it's been joked about for years now, especially the last few, but now it's official. In this YAHOO! news story, Wal-mart has basically come out and /stated that they plan to wipe out their competition. I understand that Wal-Mart is where alot of us do our shopping, but I think we're all in agreement that they are also the cause of alot of the problems in the retail world. And now they plan to be the last ones standing? I'm not seeing anything good coming out of this. Anyone else?

I try to avoid Wal*Mart whenever possible. (For example, I have skipped buying toys there, even when they are the first to get them.)

But, it is hard to completely elminate Wal*Mart. I live near Boston. There are some alternatives to Wal*Mart here.

But, even in MA, I can definitely imagine scenarios where Wal*Mart is the only game in town. Depending on where one lives, Wal*Mart might be the most cost-effective option for basics like clothes, groceries and toothpaste.

If there is no small hard-ware store, Wal*Mart is the only option. Wal*Mart might well be the cheapest (a necessity for many, especially in times like this), option for people buying clothes.

It is easy for me to say "I do not shop at Wal*Mart". But, many people do not have that option.

For the record, I agree with Jim though. This could get very bad, very quickly.

Wal*Mart is quite possible "too big to fail", but they are very fragile. Remember how bad things looked for them about 4 years ago, during the fuel crisis? They are the second largest employer in the US, dwarfed only by the Federal Goverment.

I could totally imagine Walmart being run by the Crimson twins... Cool idea for a story?

But on topic, I don't shop there usually but they do get exclusive toys once in a while that I want. Prefer Target myself, but I really hope TRU can survive Walmart's attack, its the last of the toy stores from my childhood. (Is KB still around?)

Another note, they should make this kind of big push in China, take back some of that money we keep sending over there.

KB really tried to turn things around for themselves too. After pretty much delivering the fatal blow to themselves in '03/'04, (closing about half of their stores for no reason other than to have fewer rented sites), they really tried to clean up their distribution problems. By '05/'06, they were on par with TrU and Target. By '07, they were actually better than Target, and worth going to despite their prices.

Sadly, it was not enough.

I don't shop at Walmart due to there not being one near by.I doubt they will be the last one standing. The can try but theres always someone else.Wheather it be mom and pop stores or powerhouses like Target/Kmart.They are without a doubt a very powerfull entity but they can go under just like any other business.I remember when I was growing up there was only one store like that around (Woolworth) and Woolworth went belly up too.

Also I think there are laws preventing business monopolies.

Wal*Mart already has a monopoly in some areas.

The fact they are actively declaring their intent to wipe out competitors, (rather than just leaving a tacit assumption that they would like to beat them), is a good indicator of their corporate mood.

And, again, Wal*Mart is the largest private employer in the US. They are larger than their nearest competitor.

Dom
-is pretty sure Target is little better in moral terms.

Honestly I'll take Meijer any day of the week. Also is it just Walmart that is declaring war or does that include Sams Club as well?

Same company so it only makes sense that if it's one it's both.
