While visiting a friend last week, I had a chance to watch the 2-part 'Synthoid Conspiracy" episode of the old "GI Joe" cartoon. It was, put simply, much worse than I remembered it being. Even making allowances for sloppy animation mistakes, (common to SunBow cartoons), it was pretty bad. Given that it was written by Christy Marx, this is something of a surprise. But, there was one thing that stood out. When the Joes are shown to be running low on supplies, (as a result of synthoid initiated budget cuts), one of the Joes shown complaing is Blowtorch. Blowtorch might be the lowest profile pre-86 Joe. (Aside from this scene, I cannot recall him doing much in the cartoon at all.) This is likely because Blowtorch is one of the least kid-friendly Joes. Blowtorch's gimmick is that he has a flame-thrower. In other words, his job is to set things and people on fire. (On a visceral level, this is a bit worse than shooting a laser rifle.) The cartoon implies that Blowtorch is, at the very least, practicing his craft, if not actively engaging in it. His complaint to Duke, "I can't get propane for my flame-thrower!" clearly indicates that he is using the flame-thrower for something. I am not sure if this is as bad as Major Bludd's multiple dog-tags and missing body parts. But, it is close. Dom -wants a "Combat Heroes" Blowtorch. |

I just picked up this DVD set and have been enjoying watching them with my kids. As much as I agree with you on the production values, I am willing to overlook that for the sheer joy of watching these cartoons which I used to race home to watch after school when I was a kid. Now that I am able to share them with my kids it really brings the Joes to "life" for my kids and helps them to understand why I enjoy collecting them so much. It is also fun to watch the episodes and think how stupid some of the ideas were when these were made. I get a kick out of it when my kids are watching and one of them pipes up with, "We have that toy dad, and that vehicle and that bad guy..." It makes me shed a tear I tell you! |

....D'awwwww Trench's story is cute. I've been watching more of these on the Youtube and the like. I dunno, I'm watching 'em for the fun value, and they do retain that. Also, love synthoids. What a neat ridiculous idea. Didn't they end up melting in a rather creepy scene near the end? |
