Okay so how can you guys tell if your collection has become quantity over quality? And when aquiring shells and what not where do you draw the line as to rebuild or just let it go? I was cleaning up my joe room and discovered that I have shells and partially completed vehicles all over the place. So I figured I would ask you guys what you think.

Dave,
I can totally understand the dilemma that you're left facing with regarding the surplus
of playsets, vehicles and unfinished projects that you've accumulated over time dude.
I'm pretty sure a lot of us (being a collector) has had to face a problem like yours at
one point in time or another...

The trick is and what it really boils down to is, what is your "ideal" GIJOE universe or
what goal are you trying to achieve or accomplish within your own toy collection?

- collecting specific years only?
- are you only collecting figures or both figures and their respective vehicle / playsets?
- is there any priority in your collection? (i.e. the older vs newer, vintage vs. modern etc)
- what's actually considered part of your collection and not? (separation process)

There's obviously a lot of things to consider when any one collector (to each their own)
begins to figure out what kind of collection they truly and really want to have.

For me, I began by narrowing down this possibility by identifying what I actually wanted.
Only then, was I able to begin thinking about what my GIJOE universe should primarily
be composed of... characters, the era etc. That really helped keep myself in check from
acquiring too much stuff in my own collection. There's too much stuff out there to collect
and this process really helps me identify things that I feel would fit in my GIJOE universe
so I don't just accumulate a bunch of random stuff or junk.

What's so fun about this process is, once you've set a goal and when you find yourself
completing that project... you find yourself cherishing even more those projects which
you've now found some sort of a sentimental attachment to that project or item. I do
this all the time and when it comes to me deciding what to let go and what to keep since
I trade so much... it's really hard for me to part ways with some of the things that I had
worked so hard to finish or complete. I put so much love, care and time in completing
those projects which helps me to appreciate even more that figure or that vehicle...

I wish you luck Dave, and I'm sure you'll find some great responses from our friends and
company that we have here in our little community. YoOo-JOE!

I totaly see what you are saying. Tarz is on the right track. The problem is that sometimes even a strict rule about what to collect can be too broad.

I focus almost exclusively on complete toys, usually post nostalgia-renaissance. But, over the course of 7 years, even skipping toys I wanted (for cost and space reasons), I have picked up too many toys to store, let alone display, easily. (Even smaller figures like Minicons add up after a while.)

To be honest, unless you are a dealer or a high-level kitbasher, (Mac is the only one of those on this forum), having piles of broken/incomplete (there is little difference) toys around is not a good idea. They take up space and attention that could be better spent on any number of other things.

If you do not see a broken toy being repaired or meaningfully used in the future, get rid of it. I am doing the same with redundant toys. (How many Dukes do I have? How many do I really need?)

Dom
-the same problem applies to comics.....

Keep it local.
